Evolving from the early-season beginners' races which the club hosted at the Hillingdon race circuit, London Dynamo now runs two days of racing for fourth, third, and second category men and women over consecutive weekends in spring at the Longcross course in Surrey. Known simply as Chertsey or MoD in the days when it was owned by the Ministry of Defence, Longcross is a much-loved closed road circuit thanks to its relatively long lap distance of three miles and a challenging course that includes a fast descent into a long finishing straight. These races have proved to be one of the most popular fixtures in the Surrey League. With no traffic to worry about and a closed circuit that can make you feel you are out on the open road, these events are a great way to try racing for the first time.
The Richmond Park Time Trials
It’s the best place to ride a bike in London - and we are the only club that has permission to run time trials there. Held in June and July, riders on the 10.4-mile course set off opposite the car park by Robin Hood Gate, head anti-clockwise to the roundabout by Kingston Gate and turn back to the start again before finishing near Pen Ponds car park. The road bike category is the most popular and both days sell out every year - so keep an eye out for entries opening!
London Dynamo Summer Road Race
Our 75-mile National B flagship event, currently held every July on the Milland Hill course in West Sussex, is contested by some of the best trade teams and club cyclists in the south east. It’s also one of the few E/1/2/3 events where you’ll see the passenger on a motorbike showing the time gaps on a chalkboard, Tour de France-style.
Youth and Junior races
London Dynamo Sparks & Juniors, the club’s youth initiatives, run two CX and grass track racing events per year in Spring and Autumn. These events are a great introduction to racing in a fun and safe environment. They are listed on the British Cycling website once dates are announced. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details or check @LDSparkJuniors on Twitter for updates.
The end of the season sees dozens of Dynamos competing at our members-only Club Champs and Hill Climb Championships. The club champs are held at Hillingdon, where trophies are awarded for the winners of the men, women and junior categories. Our hill climb takes place at Staple Lane in East Clandon, Surrey, and categories are based on weight – Hummingbirds (65kg or under) Lean Mean Crazy Machines (65kg-75kg) Who Ate All The Pies? (75kg-85kg) and Clydesdales (85kg and over).
In addition to our events listed above, the club also helps out marshalling races hosted by other clubs at Hillingdon and Crystal Palace as well as Surrey League and British Cycling races.
