LD goes to .....the Western Highlands

Rosshire, in the western Highlands offers some of the most stunning scenery in the UK and cycling includes the iconic Bealach Na Bà climb on the Applecross peninsula, Loch Maree and Eilean Donan Castle.

The route heads along Loch Torridon to the village of Shiedaig where it then heads up over the headland to Loch Kishorn and Loch Carron. The route then turns back inland up the glen to Achnasheen. The climax of the route is the steep descent through Glen Docherty.

Suggested café: Midge Bite Cafe, Achnasheen (69km)

This route heads south west to Sheildaig and then on to the Applecross peninsula for a clockwise loop taking in the iconic Bealach Na Bà climb and a road hugging the coast with views out to the Western Isles.

Cafe stop: The Potting Shed, Applecross Walled Garden (45 km)

A longer route down around Loch Carron to the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, with one of the most famous views in Scotland.

Cafe stop: Eilean Donan Castle cafe (72km)

A relatively flat warm up loop heading north along the edge of Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, then along the shore of Loch Maree to the fishing village of Gairloch. 

Cafe stop: Coast Coffee, Gairloch (45km)

A moderately technical gravel route with two climbs and two descents taking in multiple lochs, hills and waterfalls around the mountain of Sgorr Ruadh to the hamlet of Stratchcarron.

Suggested café: The Strathcarron Hotel (36 km)

An easier gravel loop around the Red Point beaches and then down the shore of Loch Maree, including going off road to visit Victoria Falls.

Suggested café/lunch: The Old Hall Café, Kinlochewe (71km). Serves pizzas.
