The Surrey Hills National Landscape covers 4,000 hectares of woods and the rolling Downs Hills. There are numerous permutations of cycle routes through the hills.
The Classic Surrey Hills (shorter version) tackles three of the local hills. Firstly, the route tackles Staple Lane which rises up to the Shere Woodlands before a steep descent down Combe Lane, followed by a hard right and second sharp climb up Crock North through Effingham Forest to Ranmore Common. The subsequent descent down through Ashcombe Wood is followed by the iconic Box Hill climb. This in turn is followed by a long descent and the return leg to East Molsey.
Starting point: Dish Café, East Molesey.
Suggested café: Box Hill Servery (44km).
This fast-flowing Leith Hill circuit starts in Kingston before heading to Shere via Newlands Corner and heading further to the south. It turns the corner in Leith Hill Wood before climbing Leith Hill. After then ascending to Ranmore common the route heads back to base.
Starting point: Local Hero Café, Kingston.
The Shere Loop ups the elevation a bit. Rather than using Staple Lane to climb to Shere, this route takes Shere Road and Combe Lane up to the woodlands where there is then a loop with a series of climbs and descents including St. Martha’s Hill, Alderbook Road and Sandy Lane.
Starting point: Dish Café, East Molesey.
Suggested café: The Dabbling Duck, Shere (54km).
The Redhill Aerodrome circuit goes further east than most Surrey Hills routes and so starts from Kingston rather than East Molsey.
A long steady climb up to Banstead Wood is followed by a rolling route in a circuit around Redhill Aerodrome, before a long descent back towards Kingston.
There is an opportunity to stop at the café at the aerodrome and watch the light aircraft take off and land.
Starting point: Local Hero Café, Kingston.
Suggested café: Hangar 9 Café, Redhill Aerodrome (42km).
The Rusper Circuit climbs Mill Way after Leatherhead before a long flat section along Rusper Road.
At the village of Rusper, the route turns left and heads back to London.
The flat section comes to an end with a steep climb up to Pebble Hill to Hadley Heath, and then a long descent into Kingston to the finish.
Starting point: Dish Café, East Molsey.
Suggested café: Tanhouse Café, Tanhouse Farm (37km).
This route, unusually, heads clockwise through the hills heading up Mill Way, skirts around Box Hill towards Shere before heading back up north via Ripley.
Starting point: Dish Café, East Molesey.
