Phil Cavell is the owner of Cyclefit and one of the co-founders of the first incarnation of London Dynamo in the 1990s. A talented racer in his competitive years, he has long combined performance insight with a deep understanding of the aging athlete. He is the author of The Midlife Cyclist, which has sold over 100,000 copies, and his forthcoming book The Cycling Addiction explores the psychology behind endurance sport. In January 2025, Phil had a pacemaker fitted, giving him recent and personal experience of heart health from an athlete’s perspective.
Dr Nigel Stephens is a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in sports and exercise cardiology at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) in London. He works with both patients and athletes to assess cardiovascular risk, optimise heart health, and guide safe participation in endurance sport — with particular expertise in the challenges faced by aging cyclists. An accomplished Masters cyclist and age-group track champion, Nigel understands first-hand the physiological demands of competitive cycling later in life. He brings a uniquely practical and medically rigorous perspective to heart health in performance athletes.
