Sunday Rides

Everything you need to know to show up to a Sunday Dynamo ride: when, where, and what to bring. Less rigid than Saturday in the park, but a few things still matter.

Time

About 3 minutes

Audience

All members

Format

Practical guide

Less rigid than Saturday. Not unstructured. The Sunday rides are more informal than the Saturday Park Ride, longer, further afield, and run by ride leaders out on the open road rather than marshalled from a fixed start. The rules below are short, but they all matter. Read them once before your first Sunday.

Chapter 01

Before you set out

How you prepare at home decides how the rest of the ride goes. None of these are optional.

01

Health

If you feel unwell, stay home.

If you feel ill in any way, do not come to the ride. Ride another day.

02

Route

Know the route, or download it from the Route Book.

If you do not know the route by heart, have it downloaded onto your device before you leave. The group will not be waiting at every junction.

03

Bike

Well-maintained bike.

Check gears, brakes, wheels and tyres before you arrive. A bike that fails on the road delays the whole group.

04

Carry

What to carry.

Spare inner tubes, tyre levers, a pump (or CO2), phone, money and some ID. Desirable extras: Allen keys, a chain tool and a magic link.

05

Hydration

Water and electrolyte.

Enough for the distance. Carry more on long rides and in the heat. Bonk in the middle of nowhere and it’s the group’s problem.

Chapter 02

On arrival

How sign-on works, and the two things to read before you roll out.

01

Sign-on

Wait patiently for the marshal.

Several groups are sent out inside a five-minute window. Stand by the meeting point, wait for the marshal to come to you, and don’t roll out before you’ve been called.

02

Group size

Group sizes: ideally 8, sometimes smaller.

Groups should not be so large that they’re a nuisance to other road users or unsafe for the riders. Up to 8 ideally. Smaller on narrow lanes or gravel routes. If your group grows over 8 from latecomers or stragglers, expect your leader to split it down again.

03

Pace

Pick the right pace group.

The Steady group is non-drop, with an advertised pace it will not exceed. Faster groups go at their own pace. If you’re new to pace groups, read the Non-Drop Guarantee before you sign on.

Group riding sits on top of these rules.

For pace lines, through-and-off, hand signals and the etiquette that keeps a fast group safe, read the Group Riding and Etiquette module. The skills there apply on every Sunday.

Chapter 03

Kit & equipment

What you wear matters. Especially in winter.

01

Helmet

Helmet, always.

Helmets are mandatory on every Dynamo ride. No helmet, no ride, no exceptions.

02

Club kit

At least one piece of club kit.

Jersey, gilet, jacket, bibs, socks, any one is fine. It tells other riders you are with London Dynamo. The only exception is new members waiting on their first order to arrive.

03

Conditions

Dress for the time of year.

Layer up in winter, gloves when it’s cold, a gilet or jacket when it’s wet. Warmth in cold conditions matters more than wearing club kit. Better to be warm in a plain jacket than freezing in a club jersey.

Module summary

Turn up ready.
Ride well.
Look after each other.

Sundays are about long miles in good company. Show up prepared, pick the right group for your pace, and the rest looks after itself.
