This gravel route heads up past the lakes and marshes of the Lee Valley before looping back down through Epping Forest. The route up the valley passes the Walthamstow Wetlands, Waltham Abbey, Lee Valley Country Park and the River Lee Navigation canal. The return leg heads first out into open farmland before heading right through the heart of Epping Forest before back into London.
The Classic Surrey Hills (Long Version) cycling route is the other classic London Dynamo ride in the area. This one tackles five notable climbs. After the Staple Lane climb the route descends into Shere before climbing again up Peaslake Lane, and then Leith Hill. A fourth significant climb up to Ranmore Common is followed by the usual descent and Box Hill climb.
The Kent Ramp Hunter is a relatively short but VERY challenging ride that takes on some of the steepest climbs in the area.
The Ranmore special is an unusual HITR route – comparatively flat but with the eponymous lump in the middle.
The Chelmsford Loop cycling route offers up a scenic loop from London to Essex beyond Epping Forest.
The Shere Loop cycling route into the Surrey Hills ups the elevation a bit. Rather than using Staple Lane to climb to Shere, this route takes Shere Road and Combe Lane up to the woodlands where there is then a loop with a series of climbs and descents including St. Martha’s Hill, Alderbook Road and Sandy Lane.
