Cycling Routes

Route Book - Cycling Routes. Explore London, The Thames Valley, Surrey Hills, Kent, the Chilterns and Essex

The London Dynamo Route Book brings together the best road cycling routes from London – built, ridden, and refined by club members over decades of riding. Every route comes with a downloadable GPX file, an interactive map, full elevation profile, and distance data, so you know exactly what you’re taking on before you clip in.

From fast, flat loops designed for high-intensity training to long Surrey Hills epics taking in Box Hill, Ranmore Common, and Leith Hill, there’s a route for every objective and every day on the bike. Routes range from 14km sprint circuits to 100km+ endurance days, with elevation gains from a handful of metres to well over 1,500m – all clearly displayed so you can match the ride to your ambitions. Head south through the Thames Valley for rolling, traffic-light roads, or east into the Kent hills for quiet lanes that feel a world away from the city. North through Hertfordshire and the Chilterns, steady climbs build the kind of endurance that pays off on race day. Essex opens up for big, open roads ideal for nailing your power targets.

Whether you’re building a training block, prepping for a sportive, training for a race or just want an exceptional day in the saddle  – start here.

This fast-flowing Leith Hill Circuit cycling route starts in Hampton Court before heading to Shere via Newlands Corner, before heading further south. It turns the corner in Leith Hill Wood before climbing Leith Hill from the south. After ascending to Ranmore common the route heads back to base.
The Shere Loop cycling route into the Surrey Hills ups the elevation a bit. Rather than using Staple Lane to climb to Shere, this route takes Shere Road and Combe Lane up to the woodlands where  there is then a loop with a series of climbs and descents including St. Martha's Hill, Alderbook Road and Sandy Lane.
This scenic cycling route through the Surrey Hills takes in the climb up through the Shere Woodlands, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill before the long descent down through Redlands Wood.
This London to Brighton one-way cycling route starts from Clapham Old Town and then follows the official London-Brighton route, ploughing straight through South London, on through the heart of Sussex before the steep climb up Ditching Beacon and very fast descent down to the coast.
The Frimley Loop cycling route is a slightly longer and hillier alternative heading further south towards and Farnborough.  The route steadily climbs up to the village for Mytchett and Frimley Lodge Park.
The Redhill Aerodrome Circuit cycling route heads south from Hampton Court Bridge, up over Box Hill before heading further south with a loop south of Reigate. There is an opportunity to stop at Redhill Aerodrome's café to watch light aircraft take off and land. The route then heads north towards Kingston.
If speed endurance is what you are looking to build, Drift Road offers a long flat straight.
The Hatfield House Loop cycling route heads up through North London via the Swains Lane climb in Highgate, and then heads directly up through Potters Bar to the Hertfordshire countryside just south of Hertford and Welwyn Garden City. The route passes Hatfield House before the southerly leg heads back to Regents Park via Hampstead Heath.
This gravel route heads up past the lakes and marshes of the Lee Valley before looping back down through Epping Forest. The route up the valley passes the Walthamstow Wetlands, Waltham Abbey, Lee Valley Country Park and the River Lee Navigation canal. The return leg heads first out into open farmland before heading right through the heart of Epping Forest before back into London.
The Rusper Circuit climbs Mill Way after Leatherhead before a long flat section along Rusper Road. At the village of Rusper, the route turns left round to the left and back to Kingston via Headley Lane to the north of Box Hill. The route finishes at the Local Hero café in Kingston. Starting point: The Coppernose, Hampton Court. Suggested café: Tanhouse Café, Tanhouse Farm (37km).
The Classic Surrey Hills (Long Version) cycling route is the other classic London Dynamo ride in the area. This one tackles five notable climbs. After the Staple Lane climb the route descends into Shere before climbing again up Peaslake Lane, and then Leith Hill.  A fourth significant climb up to Ranmore Common is followed by the usual descent and Box Hill climb.
The Panshanger Park Loop cycling route heads up through North London via the Swains Lane climb in Highgate, and this time heads towards Hertford. After the café stop, the route loops around Panshanger Park before the southerly leg heads back to Regents Park via Hampstead Heath.
